Salford City Council sign up to Film Industry Charter
Salford City Council has confirmed its support for the TV and film industry by signing an industry recognised Charter at an event in Manchester. Salford has a strong heritage when it comes to popular locations for film and television productions. Its industrial backdrop and unique regeneration projects have attracted large scale TV names such as Coronation Street, Waterloo Road, Max and Paddy’s Road to Nowhere, Appropriate Adults, Candy Cabs and White Van Man, as well as films such as Looking for Eric and Looking for Lowry. The Production Liaison Charter is a recognised, UK-wide industry standard which shows support for filming and the benefits it brings to the local economy. The charter signing means that Salford will be officially recognised as a ‘Filming Friendly’ city. Organised by Creative England, the signing took place at BVE North (Broadcast Video Expo), which took place at Manchester Central. Creative England recently took over responsibilities from Manchester-based regional screen agency Vision+Media for facilitating filming as well as supporting production in the North West. Councils signing the Charter agree to ensure a positive approach to filming requests; nominate dedicated employees as a first point of call to accelerate filming requests when needed; and attend quarterly Production Liaison Partnership meetings with Creative England to discuss filming issues. All these measures make Greater Manchester a more attractive option to production companies seeking a base for their projects. Cllr John Merry, Leader of Salford City Council said: “Home to Europe’s second largest media hub, with a digital creative sector expanding at twice the national average, the economic impact of filming and production in Salford cannot be underestimated. As a leading centre for TV and film productions, Salford is home to major broadcasting operations from the BBC and ITV, as well as numerous independent production houses, packed with creative talent. By signing the Production Liaison Charter, Salford City Council is officially voicing its support for the sector’s contribution to the economy, at the same time highlighting city’s film friendly credentials.” Kaye Elliott, Creative England’s Head of Location & Production Services said: “Filming makes a significant contribution to the local economy and Greater Manchester has a rich heritage supporting film and TV production. Features, such as Captain America, Sherlock Holmes, The Iron Lady and TV dramas and comedies - from Scott & Bailey to Waterloo Road, Coronation Street, and The Street – as well as epic commercials and landmark documentaries, have all chosen Greater Manchester as a filming location. The county regularly sees some of our best loved stars filming here.” As well as Salford, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Trafford, Stockport, Manchester, Wigan, Tameside and Rochdale councils have all signed up the Charter in support of making filming as accessible as possible.
