Major improvements to Albert Park, Salford
Work to upgrade and improve Albert Park in Broughton totalling more than £200,000 gets underway this week. Over the next eight weeks, a new entrance will be constructed at the corner of Great Cheetham Street West and Great Clowes Street, greatly improving disabled access to Albert Park. New boundary fencing around the park will also be installed and internal pathways will be renewed. All the works are in line with a master plan developed by Salford council in partnership with the Friends of Albert Park, and are funded through a Section 106 agreement arising from housing development in the area. Councillor Ray Mashiter, Salford City Council’s lead member for environment, said: “ These are much needed improvements to this highly valued and well used park. We have been working with the Friends of the Park for some time to enhance facilities, and it is good for all involved, and for local families and young people who visit the park, to see these plans becoming a reality.” Albert Park opened in 1877 at the height of the Victorian fashion for promenading . Present day facilities and amenities include a multi-use games area, outdoor gym, bowling green , all-weather sports pitch, children's play area and informal five-a-side pitch as well as paths, shrubs, rose beds and seasonal bedding, and many established trees.
