Joiner fined for dumping waste illegally
A joiner from Salford who illegally dumped waste from the back of his van and let a 14-year-old boy burn it has been fined. Self-employed Jacques Goldschmidt, 48, of George Street South in Higher Broughton, fly-tipped bin bags, cardboard, wood and general trade waste at a residential car park. He then watched from his car as his teenage helper burned some of the rubbish with a blow torch, heard Salford Magistrates. Goldschmidt was reported to Salford City Council's environmental crime team after a resident saw the boy set fire to cardboard boxes at St Asaph's Drive in Kersal, while Goldschmidt watched in his car. When questioned by officers, Goldschmidt said he had been tidying out his work van and had intended to take the rubbish to a tip. Goldschmidt pleaded guilty at Salford Magistrates to fly-tipping rubbish at St Asaph's Drive. He was ordered to pay full court costs of £870 and given a two year conditional discharge. Salford City Council receives around 280 reports of illegal dumping a month and spends some £140,000 a year dealing with incidents, including clean-up costs. In the last 12 months Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue responded to more than 110 reports of antisocial fires in the Broughton area many involving fly-tipped rubbish. Councillor Ray Mashiter, Salford City Council's lead member for environment said: "This was an irresponsible and dangerous act which could have had a much worse ending. "People who are producing trade waste have a responsibility to get rid of it properly at a tip or through a licensed waste carrier. "Thankfully a resident contacted us about this and we were able to provide evidence to the courts for prosecution." Report fly-tipping on 0161 909 6500.
