Father Attacked Viciously in Higher Broughton

A father-of-two was attacked in front of his family as he walked on a Salford street.

At around 11.40pm on Monday 13 October 2008, the victim, aged 22, was walking along Leicester Road in Higher Broughton.

He was with his four-year-old niece and his wife, who was pushing their two children, aged seven months and 16 months, in a pushchair.

As the family walked towards Great Chatham Street near Manley Park, they noticed two men on the opposite side of the road.

One of them, who had a can of lager in one hand a phone in the other, came over to the family and demanded cash and a mobile phone from them.

The 22-year-old victim said he did not have anything and was punched repeatedly in the face.

The children started crying and he picked one of the babies up, fearing for their safety.

The offender continued the attack, while his wife screamed at a passing car.

The assault stopped when the car pulled over and the offender fled.

The offender is described as being about 17 years old, white, of medium build and unshaven with a flat nose. He was wearing a black padded jacket with a hood and spoke with a local accent.

Police Constable Neil Jones, of Swinton Police Station, said: "This was an outrageous attack on an innocent family.

"Fortunately the victim only received minor injuries and nothing was taken from him, but he and his family were absolutely terrified by this.

"Whoever did this to them is clearly a danger on our streets and he must be caught."
