Robbers Target a Petrol Station - Swinton

A petrol station worker was threatened by robbers wielding a machete and sledge-hammer.

Shortly after 5.30pm on Friday 19 September 2008, police were called the East Lancs Service Station on the East Lancashire Road (A580) in Swinton, following a report of a robbery.

Three robbers burst into the store and threatened to kill the man working at the till if he did not hand over keys to a cash machine and money.

One offender was brandishing a machete and one had a sledge-hammer.

The man with the machete followed the garage employee into a back room and demanded cash.

Frightened, the worker handed over cash and the robbers ran out of the shop.

They escaped in a light green Volvo with a false registration number AD07 HXZ. The car had been stolen from Sale on Wednesday 17 September 2008.

The car was later abandoned on Maldon Crescent, Swinton.

Detective Sergeant Roger Smethurst, of Swinton Volume Crime Team, said: "Although the man working at the petrol station was not injured, he has been left very shaken by the attack.

"I'm appealing for anyone who may have been around at the time to let us know of they saw anything. After the offenders left the car, they were seen running down Dorchester Road, so if you saw them please call us."

Three men, aged 18, 23 and 30, and a 16-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and remain in police custody for questioning.
