Robber Slashes Woman During Handbag Snatch - Irlam

A woman suffered facial injuries after a man tried to steal her handbag in Irlam.

At about 6.50am on Monday 1 September 2008, the 39-year-old woman was on her way to a shop and was walking along Liverpool Road.

A man on a mountain bike then approached her from behind and pulled hard at the handbag she was carrying.

As the woman resisted, the offender tried to cut the shoulder straps of the handbag with something sharp.

He left without the handbag, riding away on his bike, but his attempt to steal it meant that she suffered slash wounds to her shoulder, face and upper back.

The offender is described as white, 5ft 6in tall, of slim build and around 18 years old. He was wearing a blue shiny anorak.

The woman's slash wounds were not serious, though she was treated in hospital.

Police Constable Michelle Ingham, of Swinton Volume Crime Team, said: "This was an opportunistic but violent attempt to steal someone's handbag as she was on her way to a shop.

"Maybe commuters saw a man matching the description riding a mountain bike in the area around Liverpool Road, and I would appeal to them, or anyone else with information, to get in touch."

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 5252 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
