Cash in transit robbery in Salford
A cash-in-transit driver was robbed as he picked up cash from a convenience store in Salford.
It happened at the Co-op on Clovelly Road in Swinton at about 6.55am on Tuesday 31 January 2012. The lone security driver had collected the takings from the Co-op and was returning to his van which was parked on Clovelly Road facing away from Worsley Road. The thief tried to prise the cashbox away from the driver leading to a struggle that resulted in the driver being pushed to the floor and letting go of the box, which the thief stole and ran off. As the driver tried to catch a glimpse of where the thief ran to, he saw another man stood directly in front of him waving his arms up and down as if to block his view. This man then turned and run up Clovelly Road. The first man is described as white, about 5ft 10in tall, of an average build and about 20 years old. He was wearing a plain black zip-through hooded top with the hood pulled up. He was wearing black bottoms, possibly jeans and black gloves with a black or navy coloured scarf over his face. Detective Constable Brian Johnston, of Salford CID, said: “It would appear the second man acted as an accomplice for the main thief, blocking the driver’s view so he could not chase after or get a good look at the robber. “If that is the case this would be an orchestrated crime rather than opportunistic. “Regardless, we need to find these two men because it is unacceptable that cash-in-transit drivers should be targeted in this way. I would appeal to anyone who has information about this robbery to call us as your information could be vital to helping us apprehend the thieves. “Greater Manchester Police works very close with the security industry through Operation Vanguard to offer support and protection to cash-in-transit vehicles. There will always be determined criminals who will stop at nothing to get what they want and is that is why we are appealing to the public to help us catch these men and lock them up.” Anyone with information should call Salford CID on 0161 856 5097 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
