Police in Salford step up the fight against metal theft
Police in Salford sent out a clear warning to metal thieves yesterday as part of a forcewide day of action to tackle an increase in metal theft. As part of Operation Alloy, police visited scrap yards across Salford and stopped suspicious vehicles suspected of carrying stolen metal. More than eight kilograms of suspected stolen lead was seized and officers pulled over 90 vehicles, eight of which were seized. Officers were assisted by engineers and staff from 33 partner agencies including telecoms, electricity, water, rail and tram companies, the Environment Agency, and HM Revenue and Customs. Superintendent Mark Kenny said: “Most scrap yards are law abiding and we will continue to work with them to assist them in targeting the people who take the stolen metal to them. “Over the coming months we will continue to target thieves and make it harder for them to off load stolen metals and make profits from their thefts. “I would urge people to help us fight metal theft by making their homes, businesses and community buildings less vulnerable to thieves by using security lights, fencing, alarms and good locks to keep thieves at bay. “They can also help us by providing information about suspicious activity either directly to us on 101 the new national single non-emergency number or anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.” Source: GMP.
