Police appeal for help as man exposes himself
Police in Salford are appealing for the public's help after a number of reports of a man exposing himself to young people. At this stage it is not clear if there is only one man responsible for all the incidents. Since June 2010 there have been four reports where young people, aged between eight and 12 have reported a man exposing himself. The incidents have taken place in Walkden, in particular, the Tynsbank area, an embankment behind Newearth Street and the junction of Chilham Road and Holyoak Road. The man was described in the first three reports as white, in his early 20s with short dark hair and of a slim to medium build. The most recent report was on 12 August 2010, involving an eight-year-old boy who was walking his dog on a footpath close to Ellesmere Walk around 10.50am. A man came out of some bushes and stood in front of the boy and carried out a sexual act in front of him. He spoke to the boy once then ran off towards Tynsbank. This man was described as white, 35 to 40 years old, of medium build around 6ft tall with short dark hair. He had a large red and black tribal-style tattoo on his left arm from his shoulder to his elbow and he wore a forest green coloured t-shirt, three-quarter length trousers and had two silver rings on his right hand on the middle and ring fingers. Detective Chief Inspector Bill McGreavy of Salford CID said: "I know local residents are obviously going to be very concerned reading this but I want to urge people not to panic. "We want to let everyone know about these reports, not only to find the person or people responsible but also to ensure anyone walking in the area takes safety precautions. "If anyone does have concerns about people acting suspiciously in the area, go to the nearest place of safety and report it to police, stick with friends if possible and be aware of anyone close by. "At this stage it is not clear if the first reports are linked to the more serious offence but we are doing all we can to identify who is responsible. "I want to appeal directly to the community that if you know who is responsible or recognise any of the descriptions to please get in touch." Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 5351 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111. Breakdown of incidents: A report was received on 15 June 2010 from a 12-year-old boy who had seen a man exposing himself on a field known locally as the 'Bankings' around 3.15pm. The man was some distance away and did not speak to or approach the boy, who ran off. On 4 July 2010 a 12-year-old girl was walking with a friend on an embankment behind Newearth Road around 2.30 to 3pm. They were passed by a man in a tracksuit and the victim's friend turned around and saw the man had pulled his trousers down, exposing himself. The girls ran off.
