Kevin Cranmer has spent a successful first week in Salford working out just how the Salford Totem Pole carved by his uncle Douglas Cranmer, will be restored.

The removal of old paint, without causing damage to the pole itself, was a big concern. But then they discovered an abrasive so gentle that it can remove the print from a newspaper, without damaging the paper itself. So that will come in handy.

New wood to patch up any areas of rot will most likely be shipped in from another country, so long as there are no customs issues.

The totem pole is currently resting at the Lowry Outlet Mall, where the restoration work will take place, ably assisted by apprentices from City West.
