Warm Salford farewell for Kevin Cranmer

Kevin Cranmer, the nephew of Douglas Cranmer, the original carver of The Salford Totem Pole, enjoyed a warm welcome from Salford's people on his first trip here from the west coast of Canada.

He flew in to assess damage to Salford's Totem Pole, currently resting at the Lowry Outlet Mall, before the restoration work begins, ably assisted by apprentices from City West.

Kevin's own successes include a 40 foot pole in Stanley Park, Vancouver and a 36 foot totem pole carved for the closing ceremonies at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland.

He told SalfordOnline that he has had a "wonderful time" staying in Salford.

He said: "Everyone's been so friendly, so hospitable", and added: "You go to a place you've never been before and you never know how you're going to be received. But now, a week later, I know that when I come back I'm going to feel right at home."

On one of his trips to the Lowry Outlet Mall, he performed the traditional Yela K'wa Cleansing Chant whilst wearing traditonal attire, to bless the Salford Totem Pole's restoration.

But it hasn't been all work, Manchester United fan Kevin was guest of the club for their (not so lucky) game against Aston Villa.
