Video: Salford Totem Pole finally moves home (Part 8)
by Tony Flynn and Tom Rodgers The Salford Totem Pole has finally returned to the docks where it belongs. For the past four years the 36ft Columbian pine, erected as a monument to the trading between Salford and Canada, has lain in a series of garages, in a poor state of repair. But it has been the wish of Councillor Steve Coen to bring the Totem Pole back to Salford Quays ever since it left in 2005. The delicate operation to move the Totem Pole took place first thing Tuesday morning as it was carefully loaded onto a flatbed truck in Higher Broughton and driven to the Lowry Outlet Mall. Here, it was hoisted by a crane onto rollers and moved into an empty unit in the mall and watched by bemused shoppers and several film crews. Once safely inside the unit a relieved team of specialised removal men gave a sigh of relief as the Totem Pole was carefully rested onto a raised platform. It will rest in the unit until the nephew of the original carver, Kevin Cranmer, joins the team on Salford Quays from his home in British Columbia. Then begins the delicate task of restoring the 40 year old Totem back to its former glory. Hear two young City West employees Adi and Anthony talk reverentially about the opportunity they've been given to help Kevin restore the Totem. General Manager of the Lowry Outley Mall, Robert Hallworth gives us his opinions on the Totem Pole and its possible future. He said: "As soon as Councillor Coen informed us about the Totem we knew it was a good project to get involved with for the community. "And once it's restored it will be up to the businesses in and around the Quays to see if they we keep it here."
