Cadishead Rhinos charged but lost

When Cadishead Rhinos were drawn away in the first round of the BARLA National Cup to cup giants Sharlston Rovers player coach Jason Reed must have feared the worst. The Wakefield side who are unbeaten this season have already secured a place in this seasons Yorkshire Cup Final and are flying high at the top of the Pennine League Premier Division. However on a freezing and foggy day the Yorkshire side were made to work hard for their victory against a brave Rhinos side.

The gulf in class was evident within the first twenty minutes as Sharlston produced an awesome display of attacking rugby which had the Rhinos on the back foot and finding it hard to keep up with them. Rovers hit the front in the fifth minute when scrum half Phil Hill dummied the Rhinos defence to score a converted try.

Further tries from James Hall and two from Sharlston man of the match Sam Whitehouse followed. Phil Hill continued to trouble the Cadishead side and winger Chris Shaw rose above everyone to collect Hill’s pinpoint kick to score a terrific try out wide. Stuart Bailey crashed over in the corner to give Sharlston a 38-0 half time lead.

The Rhinos however dug deep in the second half and showed excellent character to make sure it was not all one way traffic. Scrum half Ian Haselden, Steve Roberts and Russ Lammas all came close to scoring as Cadishead dominated the second half possession and it was only the superb defence by the home side that prevented this.

Sharlston’s only points of the second half came from the impressive young second rower Sam Whitehouse who completed his hat trick of tries following another strong run.

The Rhinos played with great spirit throughout with superb performances from Richie Hayes who ran himself to a standstill, half backs Ian Haselden and Martin Burgess who led the Rhino’s round the field and Cadishead’s Man of the Match winger Darren Evans who was relentless in both attack and defence
