Broken leg Rhinos downed by Bamber Bridge, U15s slammed by Hindley
Bamber Bridge 32 Cadishead Rhinos 16
Cadishead Rhinos travelled to Bamber Bridge in Preston on Saturday 22nd November but failed to bring the points home after being outmuscled by the opposition. The Rhinos started strongly after withstanding a 5 minute assault on their own line. Winger Tony Prescott picked up a loose ball and sprinted 20 metres before handing over to scrum half Ian Hasleden who raced through the Bamber Bridge defence and slipped a pass to Man of the Match, Matt Evans, who went over for a superb try with Dave Keane adding the goal.
Disaster struck in the 18th minute when Tony Prescott was tackled and he went over awkwardly resulting in him breaking his leg. Bamber Bridge responded better following the long delay and soon went over for an unconverted try 6-4 to the Rhinos, followed by a second try within 10 minutes to give them a 10-6 lead.
The Rhinos rallied and Karl Leighton collected his own kick to dive over in the corner. Keane missed the conversion and the teams were tied at 10-10. In a game which looked like it could go either way it was the home side who seized the initiative scoring two converted tries to take a 10-22 half time lead.
Cadishead again started strongly and Richie Bringau came close but couldn't ground the ball after good work by Richie Hayes and Paul Elliott however it was Bamber Bridge who extended their lead to 28-10 following a controversial converted try which was awarded by the referee although the ball had seemingly been lost in the tackle. To make matters worse Jason Reed and Ian Hasleden were both dispatched to the sin bin in the dispute that followed.
The 11 man Rhinos however contained the rampant home side well and some superb scrambling defence prevented them scoring within the next 10 minutes. With Reed and Haselden back on the field it wasn’t long before Darren Evans side stepped through the Bamber Bridge defence before stretching out to score following some good attacking play by the Rhinos. Keane added the conversion 16-28.
The game ebbed and flowed for the next 10 minute with Cadishead looking the most likely to score however it was the home side had the last say as their hooker crashed over from short range to take advantage of some tired defending by the Rhinos.
The Rhinos will look back at this game and rue the missed chances and poor indiscipline which cost them the game.
The Rhinos are in cup action next week when they face the high flying Yorkshire Cup finalist Sharlston Rovers away in the National Cup. Kick off is 1-30 pm and the club will be running a coach to Wakefield for the game should any supporters wish to make the trip over the Pennines to cheer the lads along.
Hindley U’15s 20 Cadishead Rhinos U’15s 0
Cadishead Rhinos Under 15s travelled to Hindley on Sunday 23rd November and produced a top class display in appalling conditions where fast flowing rugby was at a minimum and hard graft was at the fore front. The Rhinos showed great heart and composure and responded well despite falling behind 12-0 within the first ten minutes.
A final score of 20-0 to the home side didn't reflect on how close the Rhinos came to causing an upset. Despite being reduced to 12 men in the second half following a spate of first half injuries captain James Crozier, Tom Connor and Man of the Match Declan Hurst all went close and hardworking second rower Niall Roberts and loose forward David Finlayson both had fine games. The Rhino’s under 15’s are away to Rochdale Mayfield on Sunday 30th November 2008, Kick off 10-30am.
