Giggsy wins Northwest Footballer of the Year

Giggsy wins Northwest Footballer of the Year

At a gliterring ceremony at the Midland Hotel in Manchester city centre last night, the award for northwest footballer of the year was handed to United's Ryan Giggs, just a week short of his 35th birthday.

The judging panel - including Paul Thorogood, head of football charity the Football Foundation and Sky Sports' Alan Myers - found 34-year old Giggsy the overall winner, who was the only Manchester United player to win an award. Footballing legend, Sir Bobby Charlton, picked up his award on his behalf.

His record 771 appearances over 18 years as a Man U player have netted the Wales-born winger 146 goals. But it is his consistent charity work, as an ambassador for children's charity UNICEF, and his regular campaigns for children in South Africa who have been made vulnerable by HIV which has really pushed this footballer into the stratosphere.

Over 85,000 votes from 163 countries decided the night’s other footballing winners including Fernando Torres for the Barclays Premiership Player of the Year, Tranmere’s defender Ian Goodison was voted Coca Cola League 1 Player of the Year and Accrington Stanleys’ Paul Mullin for Coca Cola League 2 Player of the Year. Northwich Victoria’s striker, Lee Steele pipped Altrincham’s Colin Little to the post receiving the Blue Square Conference League Player of the Year title.

Sir Alex Ferguson also won an Outstanding Achievement Award at the event.
