Top Sports Psychologists To Meet At Salford
Professor Dave Collins, the former Performance Director for UK Athletics will be one of the co-presenters at a University of Salford event this month dealing with ‘mental toughness’ in sport. Some of the country’s top sports psychologists will be attending the event on 27 November to discuss the best methods of coaching top athletes for the intense pressure of major sporting contests.
Topics to be discussed include how to develop mental toughness in athletes and the best psychological techniques to ensure good teamwork and collective toughness.
Professor Collins will be relating his experiences of leading the UK’s athletics teams and how feedback and assessment of techniques can deliver better results.
The workshop is being run by Dr Tom Fawcett from the University’s School of Health Care Professions, who has himself coached Olympic athletes to medal winning success.
“Mental toughness is a key factor in sporting success,” he said. “When athletes are in top events, they need to have the techniques to cope with the pressure – and that’s where sports psychologists come in.
“To have someone like Professor Collins attending our event is great news as he’s at the cutting edge in this subject and I’m sure all of our delegates will benefit from his experience.”
Salford is enjoying a growing reputation in the field of sports psychology with Dr Fawcett now the national co-ordinator for psychology workshops for the British Association of Sports and Exercise Sciences.
