Cadishead Rhinos Match Report by Paul Elliott
Cadishead Rhinos 30 Higginshaw 16Cadishead Rhinos were made to work hard for their victory at Lord Street on Saturday 1st November by a very stubborn Higginshaw side, and it wasn't until 20 minutes from time that the Rhinos managed to take the game away from the Oldham side.
For the previous 60 minutes the lead changed hands on several occasions as both teams battled to take control. Higginshaw drew first blood as they scored against the run of play when their winger picked up a loose ball close to his own line and sprinted 80 yards for a touchdown. Within 2 minutes, Prop forward Darroch Robertson, stormed over from close range and Steve Roberts added the conversion to give Cadishead a 6-4 lead.
Higginshaw regained the lead on 25 minutes when good passing and sloppy defence by the Rhinos resulted in a try out wide however the Rhinos went into the half time interval with a 10-6 lead after fellow Prop Dave Keane fooled the Higginshaw defence with a clever blindside dart to score in the corner.
The second half was less than a minute old when Higginshaw pounced on the ball following a fumbled kicked and went over for a converted kick to take a 2 point lead. The Rhinos levelled the game in the 50th minute when Steve Roberts knocked over a penalty kick. Amazingly Higginshaw took the lead again on 55 minutes with a further try.
The Rhinos however stepped up a gear in the final 20 minutes to score 3 converted tries. Steve Roberts sidestepped his way through the Higginshaw defence for the first, then Russell Lammas finished off some great passing play for the second before captain Mark Woodfine gathered Steve Roberts deft kick to give the scoreline a somewhat flattering look.
Loose forward Richie Hayes was voted 'Man of the Match' after a typical barnstorming display.
The win takes the Rhinos to sixth in table. Their next game is on Saturday 8th November away to undefeated Moss Bank Bulldogs, kick off 2.00 pm.
