Video: Salford Vikings Basketball aiming high
by Callum Doolan

The Vikings Basketball club are looking to introduce some new players to the increasingly popular activity of basketball in Salford.

This fast-paced sport is becoming ever more popular and the Vikings are looking to cater for this by recruiting new players.

The club is open to players aged six to 21 and they train on Wednesdays at Salford City Academy on Northfleet Road in Peel Green.

Vikings also run a Saturday basketball league, which is hoping to recruit new teams.

We joined Sarah Morrisey, the club's Chairman, who told us: “Basketball is a really good sport. We’re looking for people of both genders and all ages to join.”

"At this time of year, if you're a mum watching your kids play football, it's even better to be [indoors] watching them play basketball!"

Salford Vikings enter teams from Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 in a league on Friday evenings and two under-20 Division 1 and 2 teams on Monday evenings at Ameachi Basketball Centre, Whalley Range.

“It gives the young people a chance socialise whilst getting good exercise and gaining new skills,” said Sarah.

Inspirational players such as Manchester-born NBA star John Ameachi have set a good example for children to get involved and try the sport for themselves.

And with the London 2012 Olympics drawing ever closer, interest in the sport is set to go sky–high.

You can join Salford Vikings Basketball club by turning up to their Wednesday evening sessions from 6.30pm. The first session for new players is always free.
