Monton Amateurs FC 2 Elton Vale 1
Our second successive home fixture saw us playing one of last seasons relegated sides, Elton Vale, in what we knew would be a very difficult fixture. We started with good tempo and excellent off the ball movement and it was no surprise when we took the lead through Scott Weir finishing off a good move with a clinical strike after only five minutes. Elton Vales keeper produced several good saves as the Ammies got into full throttle to produce many goalscoring opportunities but could not make them count. As is usual in football when chances are not taken the opposition are still in contention and Vale equalised midway through the second half to give themselves a glimmer of hope. Monton's response was exactly what we expect as the Ammies raised their game to a higher level and produced some fine, fast flowing moves to keep Vale trapped in their own half for the remainder of the game. Our winning goal came with fifteen minutes left to play as Nick Houghton sealed the points with an opportunist goal following a corner to drive the ball high into the visitors net. Overall a good solid team performance against quality opposition with three valuable early season points gained and an excellent debut for new signing Rob Whatmough. 1.J.Perry 2.P.Redford 3.G.Switzer 4.N.Houghton 5.J.Taylor 6.J.Bell 7.C.Redmond 8.D.Halsall 9.S.Weir 10.R.Whatmough 11.A.Campbell 12.B.Naylor 13.D.Coffey 14.M.Baguley Source: Monton Amateurs.
