Salford at sixes and sevens - and favourites for last
by Tom Rodgers

Betting websites like Bet365 are making Salford City Reds favourites to take the Super League wooden spoon this year.

Salford are 4/5 odds on to take last place in the 2010 league after four matches and four losses.

Last-placed side of the 2009 season, Celtic Crusaders have started the season much more strongly, with two wins and four points.

The only team below Salford in the engage Super League are now the Catalans Dragons, who have had their own disastrous start to the season, with 108 points racked up against them.

But, back to Salford, and the latest 7-0 loss at the Willows has led to anger among some sections of Reds fans.

Salford were barely able to get the ball out of their own half in the first 40 minutes and it was by some miracle that they didn't go further behind than 4-0.

After 24 minutes the one and only score had been made, by Menzies of Bradford Bulls. It was then a 50 minute wait for any further addition to the score (three points from Bradford's Matt Orford).

The Willows witnessed an almost entirely joy-free account of rugby league this Saturday as they lost by one try to none.

So, despite the good news that a loan has been secured from Salford City Council - which will boost the chances of Salford City Reds new Barton stadium being delivered - there are still sections of Reds fans who feel aggreived at the way the season is going.

New players have not made the impact that Shaun McRae had hoped, and a back line without Richie Myler is often left looking one-paced and shorn of invention.

There is plenty of ground to be made up, and Salford will have to do a lot of work if they are not to be left adrift at the foot of the table.

Upcoming fixures for Salford include Catalans Dragons on Friday 5th March, with kick off at 8pm. It will be their chance to start the season from scratch...
