Local start-ups win with Salford Hundred Venture
by Tom Rodgers
Local business consultants Salford Hundred Venture have announced the latest series of winners from its Aspire to Enterprise (A2E) programme. The A2E trains local people in the basics of business, and is aimed at anyone looking to go into self-employment, from those who are unemployed, to students, to those in full-time jobs. It is a free course intended to help those who are interested in setting up a business and have a chance to enter the Best Enterprise Idea competition, for which the winners gain start-up funds and business support. Business trainer Mike Hilton, featured in the video, takes the trainees through the complex world of limited liability, business start-ups and the difficulties of accounts, registration and setting up a workforce. It's jointly organised by Salford Council and Salford Hundred Venture, who are based just off Frederick Road, M7, and the competition is judged by a panel of local business experts. Among the recent winners is Steve Sweeney, with A&S Joinery. Steve received a prize of £1500-worth of business support for his entry to the Aspire to Enterprise programme, which he's used to obtain specialist tools, a laptop and help with advertising and marketing. Other winners include Paul Campbell, a local painter and decorator, whose idea to create a commercial painting business using the latest spraying technology also won him £1500 in start-up costs.
