Barton upon Irwell RC Cemetery Burial registers 1823 - 1948

SalfordOnline were delighted to receive a CD Rom from Laurence Gregory who has archived all the burial registers at the Catholic cemetery at Barton upon Irwell from 1823 to 1948 and what an incredible insight they give into life or more accurately death in the area in those years.
There is a complete alaphabetical list of each person buried there, complete with date of birth and date of death, also the cause of death, and thankfully an index of what the medical term for cause of death means today.

Here are just a few examples chosen at random and what unusual causes of death.

John Slater Barton, aged 6 years and 3 months died 25/8/1824.

Cause of death: Accidentally shot by playing with a loaded pistol as a childs cannon.

John Gaston Oldfield Lane, aged 89 died 5/2/1824.

Cause of death: General Decay(Old Age)

James Welsh Patricroft aged 6years and 7 months died 15/3/1824

Cause of death: Chincough.(Illness involving a deep cough, aspiratory whoop followed by vomiting. Now known as Whooping Cough or Pertussis)

Mary O'Neill Barton aged 12 died 27/8/1823

Cause of death: Brain Fever.(A medical condition where part of the brain becomes inflamed and causes fever type symptoms, usually referred
to today as Encephalitis or Meningitis).

Ann Cutler Eccles died aged 55 died 13/5/1824

Cause of death: Twitching and a bilious infection.(The sudden shaking of the body, caused by the rapid and uncontrollable contraction and relaxation of the
muscles. Often associated with epileptic seizures)

John O'Neill Barton aged 2 died 25/11/1825

Cause of death: Scalded.

Thomas Thompson Barton aged 85 died 21/6/1827

Cause of death: Mortification of foot.(The death or decay of a certain type of body, usually due to gangrene or necrosis)

James Taylor Barton died 9/10/1834

Cause of death: Killed by falling from scaffold.

James Kay Barton aged 14 died 14/7/1836

Cause of death: Scurvy.(A disase caused by a lack of Vitamin C, causing spots on the skin and heavy bleeding).

John Henshaw Pendleton aged 4 died 5/1/1841

Cause of death: Small Pox.(An acute, highly infectious disease characterised by high fever and aches with widespread eruption of blistering
pimples that form pockmarks. Usually hits in epidemics).

Henry McGawly Patricroft aged 5 weeks died 16/1/1842

Cause of death: Frog on stomach.(A cancer or hernia)

Samuel Henshaw Pendleton aged 30 died 19/1/1842

Cause of death: Insanity.

Mary Cropby Patricroft aged 48 died 16/7/1842.

Cause of death: Turn of life.(The menopause).

Mary Hamlet Eccles aged 39 died 13/6/1845.

Cause of death: St Anthony's Fire.(The effect of long-term ergot poisoning, usually due to the ingestion of alkaloids, caused by rye and other
cereals infected by fungus. Leads to excruciating pain, gangrene and hallucinations)

Joseph Turner Barton aged 58 died 17/9/1845.

Cause of death: Accident on the railway.

Ann McStay Eccles aged 1 year 10 month died 24/6/18281

Cause of death: Woine Fever(Unknown. Possibly Swine Fever).

John Graham Salford aged 54 died 24/9/1843

Cause of death: English Cholera (A disease common in hot climates, at the close of summer or early autumn, characterised by a catarrh
inflammation of the stomach which extends into the intestines, causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea).

John Lamb Salford aged 8years 10 months died 28/12/1853

Cause of death: Slow Fever(Any illness involving high temperature)

Hi Paul, the only one relating to Weaste cemetery is a cracking site called The Friends of Salford Cemetries Trust, click on this and have a look at the Biographies section, details of some of the more interesting bodies buried in there, shall we say, dates from 1857 - 1959. Did you looka t the first part of St Thomas's Church, we are going back tomorrow and visiting the crypt and going up the bell tower looking across Salford and beyond!
