Before the Bench 1876: Part One

You may recall that earlier this year we ran several stories from the Salford Magistrates Book of Prisoners Offences from 1877, I have been fortunate enough to borrow two more ledgers, one from 1876 and the other from 1879.

There are some great stories, stealing coal, drunkeness, the theft of a goose, even assaulting the Chief Constable of Salford! Shall we have a look and see if any of your ancestors were up to no good, all those years ago?

Samuel Howard aged 19 was arrested by Sgt Eyers and charged with stealing two bags of coal the property of Andrew Knowles and Son to the value of £4. He was remanded in custody for a week.

George Bailey aged 30 was arrested by PC Mulligan and charged with being drunk and disorderly in Oldfield Road and damaging the PC's tunic. He was sentenced to fourteen days in prison.

James Williams aged 49 was arrested by PC Ormerod and charged with being drunk in Salford Workhouse and assaulting the porter, Robert Power. He was sentenced to fourteen days in prison.

Elizabeth Ashley aged 42 was arrested by PC King and charged with being drunk and disorderly in Broad Street, Pendleton. She was fined 7/6d.

Julia Atherton aged 42 was arrested by Sgt Quick and charged with stealing a bottle of wine the property of Charles Gradesky, Regent Road, the value of 2/6d. She was remanded in custody.

John Robinson aged 21 was arrested by PC Lewis and charged with violently assaulting Benjamin Shulls by striking him on the head with a poker. He was remanded in custody.

Mary Ann Edge aged 37 was arrested by Sgt Quick and charged with the theft of a shawl. the value of 2/6d the property of Edward Fazackerly, Regent Road. She was sent to prison for two months.

Richard Hayes aged 40 was arrested by PC Gilmore and charged with being drunk and disorderly in Rockcliffe Street and attempting to stab PC Gilmore with a knife at the police office, Salford. He was remanded in custody.

John Powell aged 30 was arrested by PC Jones and charged with tendering a base coin to James Burke of Broughton Lane, Salford for the purchase of two pints of beer. He was remanded in custody.

Margaret Payne aged 31 was arrested by PC Fraser and charged with stealing a pair of boots and a chemise the value of 4/ from the Wesleyan Chapel, Gt Cheetham Street, Higher Broughton the property of Daniel Kay. She was sent to prison for one month with hard labour.

Catherine Flynn aged 36 was arrested by PC Brassington and charged with violently assaulting Peter Kerr by striking him on the head with a poker. Remanded in custody.

Elizabeth Ward aged 36 was arrested by Sgt Thorpe and charged with the theft of 2Ibs of fish and 1Ib of tongue the value of 1 shilling from the shop of Ann Gordan, Regent Road. She was given one months imprisonment with hard labour.

Peter Phillips aged 41 was arrested by Capt R.W. Torrens, the Chief Constable and charged with being drunk and jostling people in the streets also assaulting the Chief Constable in the execution of his duty at Gt Cheetham Steet, Higher Broughton. He was fined
£2 and one month in prison.

Harry Lowe aged 26 was arrested by PC Hudson and charged with sleeping in a room of a house under construction, in George Street, Higher Broughton. He was sentenced to a month in prison.

Thomas Chapman aged 36 was arrested by PC Lyque on suspicion of stealing a goose which he had in his possesion. He was discharged.

Can you imagine even getting close to giving a high ranking copper a dig these days, never mind the Chief Constable. Good to see that they were on the beat those days. Looking through these cases we see nothing much has changed, violence, drunkeness, theft apart from nicking geese off course. More please.
