Video: Bridgewater Canal 250th Anniversary
by Tony Flynn
To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the opening of The Bridgewater Canal, SalfordOnline have made a special series of videos telling the story of this incredible inland waterway which helped kickstart the Industrial Revolution and brought mass employment to the Salford and Manchester area. We'll be taking a narrowboat down the first-built section of the canal and we start our journey at the Delph in Worsley. It's the site of the famous underground canals that helped bring the Duke of Bridgewater's coal from his many collieries to the surface, so that they could be shipped to Manchester swiftly and safely, halving the price of coal overnight. On our journey we will look at some of the fascinating sites of cultural and historical importance along the 10 mile canal route to Manchester. To whet your appetite we will be looking at historical buildings, dry docks, an inland lighthouse, steel foundries, railways, Royal visits, an aqueduct, stone masons' carving marks, the country's most famous football stadium, and much, much more.
