Salford and Manchester beer labels
By Tony Flynn.

Here is a small reminder of our drinking past for you at SalfordOnline, with a collection of beer labels many of them from long gone local breweries.

In the late 1970's I used to write to breweries around Great Britain asking them for old beer labels, and here is a small selection from local breweries.

You may recall Swales Ale, a beer that was often referred to as "Swales Swill" by the more discerning drinker, who were taken over by Boddingtons in 1971 thankfully.

Does anybody remember the Hi - Spot Pale Ale? a nice label, probably tasted foul.

Wilsons were based in Newton Heath and the Olympic label was a promotion for the Olympic games when it was held in London in 1948.

Threlfalls had a brewery on Cook Street, off Chapel Street, Salford, this shows a label from the infamous 4 pint flagon, a forerunner of the party can, very popular at parties I believe.

Joseph Holt's is still going as we all now, but here are a few of their labels.

The Hyde's labels are nice, particularly the Oatmeal Stout one, sounds a proper health drink!

Anybody have drinking memories of these beers on show? if you do drop us a line at newsdesk@salfordonline.com

Cheers!

What about Chesters Dark mild, or as my old man used to say, " the three Fs" fighting fa*ting & f***ing beer. Casey

Threlfalls did a cracker called "Gauntlet" described as the young man's pint! The bar dispenser was a metal fisted glove!, so obviously no incitement to violence or otherwise there then. Also did a Double Diamond really work wonders? tasted sh*te though.

Some reminders there! does anybody remember the "Bodkan" brought out by Boddingtons in the mid seventies as a rival to Watneys four/seven huge party can's both were foul. I recall that the Threlfalls flagon came in a glass jug with a moulded handle, again tasted sh*te. Nice labels though.
