Video: A Taste of Honey in Winton - Part 1
by Tony Flynn and Tom Rodgers

Tucked away in Winton, off Blantyre Street are Cleveleys allotments, home to (if you will excuse the excruciating pun) a veritable hive of activity are the bee hives of Bob Marshall and his partner Ann Taverner.

Bob and Ann are the owners of four hives complete with over 60,000 bees which can produce over twelve pounds of honey per year.

We were given a guided tour of the hives - complete with protective clothing - whilst Bob and Ann guided us through the process of bee keeping, which proved to be really fascinating.

In this first part of this video we'll find out about the smoker that calms the bees, the structure of a bee hive and the basic theory and practice of beekeeping.

The top boxes in the hives are called supers and the larger box at the bottom of the hive is the brood chamber, the strip between the brood and the supers is a queen excluder, this is to save the queen bee escaping.

When the honey is harvested a percentage of the honey is left in the hive to feed the bees through the winter months.

Coming up in the second part of our video: more fascinating info about how Salford leads the way in beekeeping, meeting the queen bee, discovering the city's youngest beekeeper, and of course, taking home a real taste of Salford honey.

A stinging comment to which as Austin Powers would say, "Oh beehive!" Great informative video though, glad to see your reporters risking life and limb for quirky stories.

lovely video but the amount of honey is rather greater than you estimate.
