by Tony Flynn
As you walk along Broadwalk, Salford Precinct there is a beautiful little church which dates back to 1856, designed by Edwin Hugh Shellard in the Gothic style. Welcome to St Paul the Apostle, Paddington, Salford.
Canon David Wyatt has been the rector of this church for over forty years and is a well loved and respected man in the area for the incredible work that he does for the local community.
He runs a recycling scheme for newspaper, and supplies many of the less well off members of the parish with furniture and white goods, which has been donated to him, this is sold at a fraction of the original price.
As well as the recycling services, food and clothing are provided for the needy, also there is a night shelter for the homeless.
I was particularly glad to see that the original war memorial which stood outside the church until being badly vandalised, has been fully restored and put in position in the church's walled garden, complete with names of parishioners who fell in the Great War.
Canon Wyatt also runs the Ascension church in Broughton, this was once a run down church which he has transformed into a community-friendly church, he is currently making a "Paradise Garden" with the help of locals in which vegetables will be grown.
Finally the St Paul's Church is well worth a visit if you are passing, it really is an architectural gem with a fully decorated ceiling, a magnificent marble font, stained glass windows and an awesome pipe organ which dates back to 1787.
Call in, you will not be disappointed.

That's me Seadog, haven't had a story make me so angry in a long time. However the two match scapegoat ban for Rooney is having the same blood boiling effect! |

Fair do's Ian, (Oops, Salfordian). If you're the same Salfordian whose blood is boiling about the disgusting MP's Golden-handshakes, we've probably got a lot in common. |

Hey Seadog, I was only teasing and I do agree with your comments. I can tell you are a fine and upstanding citizen and enjoy your various contributions on here. Salford Ian, oops.... |

You're right to be proud Salfordian, (all of you). I'm proud of my roots too. You're also right about a pseudonym not guaranteeing exclusivity, though I must admit I thought it did in SoL terms. Re your 'precious' comment... many of my friends knew my pseudonym, and I would be unhappy to think that comments, (that I may not agree with), from other users of the same name, may be thought of as coming from me. If that's being 'precious', I plead guilty. |

I could say the same as I didn't post here either. However most of us are entitled and indeed should be proud to call ourselves Salfordian, I guess that where are more than a few old Seadogs knocking about too. Not sure that using a pseudonym is any guarantee of exclusivity, so why be so precious about it? |

Note to Ed. Someone is using my pseudonym!!! I have not posted on this article. |

He's simply a Shepherd controlling the Sheeple. I neither like NOR respect him. He shows his TRUE colours when he knows you are a non believer. |
Comment by Tony Flynn 6th April 2011
I am in full agreement with you, Canon Wyatt is a lovely bloke. |

Canon Wyatt is indeed a wonderful man. I have known him for many years and he has never changed. He has helped so many people, it would be impossible to put a number to them. The church building is truly a gem and was once described by no less than the former Archbishop of Canterbury, as "An oasis in the midst of shops and tower blocks, with unemployed youngsters planting roses around it." The former Archbishop was at the time, addressing a large congregation in Westminster Abbey London ! Sir David yes, but let's leave the Sainthood for many years yet. |

Canon Wyatt is a veritable saint for all the good work he does in Salford and Broughton, about time he he received some recogonition although I,m sure he would be the first to shy away from publicity |

Canon Wyatt is one of the most genuine people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. His committment to community issues is commendable and should be supported by all! |

Well done for bringing Canon Wyatt to more peoples attention, the man performs literally miracles for the poor and needy of the parish and nobody is turned away. A charming and humble man. Salford should be proud of him. |

I have known Canon Wyatt for several years, too be honest I think he should be given the title, "Mr Salford" for all the good deeds that he does not only for his parishoners but for anybody needing help or solace, although he would steadfastly refute this claim.
This man has been long over neglected for all his charitable work and deseves the highest respect that he so obviously deserves, for forty years he has served the people of Salford, give this man a knighthood if not a sainthood. Canon Wyatt I salute you. |
