Centenary Walkway plaques at Salford Quays
By: Tony Flynn The next time you are having a bracing walk along Salford Quays have a look behind the Lowry Theatre at the Centenary Walkway. Set into the walkway are 24 stainless steel plaques each one telling the history of Salford docks and the surrounding area, details of the men who dug the canal and the hardships they endured, the loss of life suffered by merchant seaman whilst local characters are also immortalised. They were installed in 1994 to commemorate the 100 years of the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal by Queen Victoria and are the work of poet Su Andi and local people who contributed their own unique views. They are a bit hidden away but well worth looking out for as they tell a history of Salford's heritage and history.
