'Mr Salford' - John Wilkinson part 3: Buile Hill Hotel
by Caroline Kullendorff In 2007 the Wilkinson Corportation made a planning application to install a new hotel within the Buile Hill Park Mansion. John's plan was to produce a high-quality banqueting/wedding facility, but even after he was granted planning permission, the bid failed because of vocal community groups, including the Claremont Community Association, debating the need for the plans to go through. It was apparent that local residents believed that a four star hotel was not the right choice for Buile Hill Mansion, and preferred that the space be used as a community resource. The Heritage Lottery Fund North West eventually sided with the community associations and John had to back away from the hotel project, which he says would have provided the perfect place to have a wedding in Salford, or a place to stay while visiting relatives in Hope Hospital (Salford Royal, Stott Lane). Here we go a little more in depth into the history and story behind the Buile Hill hotel idea, and the plans that scuppered it.
