The Only Brewer in Salford: Bazens
by Tony Flynn and Tom Rodgers Tucked away in an industrial unit in Knoll Street, Broughton, Salford is Salford's only Brewery, behind closed doors we find Bazens' Brewery, perhaps the aromatic smell of barley, hops and yeast should give the game away. Bazens' was set up in July 2002 by Richard Bazen and his wife Jude and they have gone from strength to strength, winning numerous awards at beer festivals throughout the country over the years. In a typical week the brewery can produce 12 x 36 Gallons of beer which adds up to a whopping 3,456 pints a week! Richard told us how he got started in brewing. He says: "I was a homebrewer for many years, and I always had quite an interest in producing good beer. Then about 15 years ago, I found myself at a bit of a loose end, when a job came up at the Firkin Brewery in Stafford. I applied, but found myself posted to the Holt, Plant and Deakin in Wolverhampton. It wasn't where I wanted to be, but I got some very good training there. "After a brief interlude I set up Bridgewater Ales down on Chapel Street, then moved to Phoenix as Head Brewer for a couple of years. In 2002, I decided to go out on my own and started up Bazens as a microbrewery." Bottled beer is also brewed for special events as Richard and Jude have done recently with Mayors Ale, a bottled beer specially commisioned by The Mayor Of Salford, Roger Lightup, to be sold in aid of his chosen charity of the year. One of the bottled beers is called Blue Bullet, this is because in 2003, Bazens' produced a series of 12 single hopped beers with an astrological theme. The Virgo beer used Green Bullet hops from New Zealand, as the colour for the Virgo sign is Blue it was decided to call this beer Blue Bullet, it was so popular that it has become one of Bazens' regular brews. How did I find this out? Simple. I read that information on the label of a bottle of Blue Bullet! If this video has whet your thirst for a pint of Bazens' you can find their beer in several outlets in Salford including The New Oxford, The Kings Arms and The Crescent Pub, or if in Manchester City Centre pop into Corbierres off St. Anne's Square. May I recommend the Pacific Bitter, cheers!
