Peel Green's hidden gem - The Theatre Organ Heritage Centre, Part 2
Written and presented by Tony Flynn
Filmed and edited by Tom Rodgers

Welcome to The Theatre Organ Heritage Centre, Alexandra Road, Eccles.

Entering the building is like stepping back in time to the days of the silent cinema, with a small purpose built cinema on the ground floor with a Wurlitzer Organ on a raised stage, old fashioned wooden seats are neatly lined up for the patrons comfort, evoking memories of the days of the silver screen.

Downstairs is the museum dedicated to Robert Hope-Jones who founded the Hope-Jones Electric Organ Company in 1893, it contains many examples of theatre organs along with sheet music and assorted memorabilia, which give a fascinating insight into the world of Theatre Organs.

The Theatre Organ Heritage Centre is open for film screenings each Wednesday between the hours of 1.00pm-2.30pm whilst the Hope-Jones Museum is open each Wednesday, Friday and Saturday between the hours of 11.00am-3.00pm.

Just came across this video whilst looking through the site, excellent stuff, wonder how many people in Salford are aware of this building?

We visited Salford Quays in October and met a couple of people we knew, also from our village in Yorkshire, who told us they were going later to the Organ Heritage Centre on their trip.We had no idea where it was, neither did they, and I am now astonished to find it is within half a mile of where I was born and bred in Peel Green. What a great place it seems to be, we shall certainly try to visit next time we are over in Lancashire. Dorothy Mercer

Nice to hear about you and your friend jimmy's love of organ music. Maybe be you could do a little pop show to raise some much needed funds, I rember seeing your little combo in the old Soverign club a good few years ago, they certainly lit my fire, thats if jimmy is still hanging about.Chalky white

On Saturday I passed the building and the doors were open, my friend Mr. Morrison also called in, Jim as I call him once used to tread the boards many tears ago in an upbeat combo, The Lizard Kings, silly name I know but he was young. I was permitted to bust a few licks on the organ and the years rolled past. Sadly it was raining as we left to drive to eccles and became virtual riders in the storm as they say.A marvellous afternoon out with tea and biscuits. Ray Manzerek.

I find it sad, that such a jewel in our community is totally ignored by local press, and our wonderfull council, who as a rule can sniff out a bit of publicity for themselves, come on get down there and give them the support they so richly deserve. Ian Mclagan.
