Ghostly goings on in Packet House Patricroft
by Tony Flynn and Tom Rodgers

Stories of a Ghost at The Packet House in Patricroft have been told for over 50 years so we decided to pay the pub a visit to see for ourselves.

The ghost is purported to be of a woman called Mary, who has been seen by staff and customers alike, she is described as wearing a shawl and dressed in Victorian clothing.

The pub dates from the 1820s and is named after the "packet boats" which plied for trade alongside the nearby Bridgewater Canal carrying mail from Worsley to Manchester and vice versa.

The landlords Anthony and Carole and son Stephen have all seen Mary, as well as Carole's mum who works behind the bar. None admit to being the least bit frightened by the ghost and admit to actually looking forward to seeing it!

Carole is contacting a paranormal society to spend the night in the pub with light monitors and sensors in the hope of detecting the spirit of Mary.

If you have any stories relating to ghosts at the pub we would love to hear from you, so feel free to leave a comment below.

Eerie, no, not only the pub but how Tony has become a reincarnation of Fred Dibnah! Seriously though, look again at the bit where Tony looks at you from the entrance to the tunnel. It's Fred without the flat cap! The "ghost" is not putting me off going in after many years of being away, it is the lack of Real Ale in the place. Do get those hand pumps working again! One of my favourite 'haunts" in the late 60's-early 70's was the Oddfellows Arms on Church St. (The older building.) I would help out now and again with the cellar. I was told that grave robbers used to store cadavers taken from Eccles Parish Church graveyard, across from the pub, in there. Hence the name of the pub, I suppose. As for The Packet House; I have seen a few strange sights in there myself. 'nuff said.

Regarding tunnels under pubs, many years ago I went in the cellars of The Grapes on Church Street, the landlord showed me tunnels that had been bricked up, one was still slightly open, it lead down Church Street and allegedly came out near the Hare and Hounds pub, this was in 1978, we shone a torch into the tunnel and it did stretch down Church Street, I have often wondered what they were for and if it is still there. Could make a good story for you at SalfordOnline.

I find it fascinating that there are bricked up tunnels and passages underneath the pub, where do they run too and what were they for?. Further investigation perhaps boys?.

I have heard stories of a ghost in the pub that go back to when the Millward family had the pub in the 1960's. Not sure that I believe in them myself but it is all a bit odd.
