Barton upon Irwell graveyard controversy - (Part 2 of 2)
by Tony Flynn and Tom Rodgers

In this second episode of a two-part series we look at The Barton Wesleyan Chapel, which was built in 1796 and demolished in 2001 to build the Maranatha Court block of flats.

Eric Heaton is a local historian who has 25 relatives buried in the graveyard, including a prominent man from the temperance movement in Salford, Mr Edward Heaton.

Les Hampson, head of Abbotsound Ltd promised at the time that only a few headstones would be disturbed, a memorial garden would be erected and that the families of the buried would be informed as to what was going to happen to the removed gravestones.

Headstones were supposed to be put in storage by Abbotsound, but it was reported at the time that lorries were seen on site taking away the headstones, which were then allegedly to be sold for architectural reclamation.

[Update] In the weeks since we filmed this video we have repeatedly tried to get in touch with all three councillors for Barton, David Jolley, Norbert Potter and John Mullen but have had no reply from any of them.

We have also contacted Abbotsound for comment, with no response.

I owned the butchers shop at Barton upon Irwell ( BARTON MEATS ), I remember the church and graveyard in the 70s, nice and peacefull, as was the whole area. On my last visit to Barton ( I now have retired to Cornwall ) I was most upset to see what had happened to the area, it has changed beyond recognition, and not for the better in my oppinion. The developer should be held to account for not doing as he should have and the councilors should be ashamed for letting it happen, all residents should make a stand on behalf of the people who are now lying in desocrated graves. Would YOU like it to be you ?. Alan Ratcliffe.

I too have relatives buried in the graveyard, I have found some of the records, but would like a more detailed list of information, do you have the information available to look at? My grandparents were both wesleyan methodists in the barton area, I would love to make contact - can't view the video, but can hear it! Anne Alderman

Have read about this outrage on The Salford Council Forum page, well done to everyone at SalfordOnline for bringing this to our attention. This is shocking behaviour by the developer who should be thouroughly ashamed of himself, but I doubt that he is, congratulations to Tony Flynn and Eric Heaton for all their good work in bringing this issue into the open, I look forward to future developments. Exiled Salfordian.

Thanks so much for making this video. I've only recently found out that my relatives were Wesleyan Methodists and are buried in this graveyard. I had assumed that the whole graveyard had been grassed over when the new buildings were built so now I've got some investigating to do! Sue Smith.

Thanks for your kind words Jane, much appreciated. We intend to do a follow up to this story with hopefully interviews with Councillors from the Barton area and Les Hampson. We have tried to contact them and have left messages for them but at this moment no one has contacted us yet, so as they say, keep watching this space.

Congratulations to Tony Flynn for a great video on this subject. Many thanks also go Eric Heaton who has been a great help to me regarding my relatives that are buried in this cemetery. I live in New Zealand and in 2002 I visited the UK and came to Eccles to visit this graveyard, Eric went out of his way to meet me and help me locate my family. My ancestors have lived in Eccles, in and around Church Street, since the early 1800's until my Dad left in 1916 to go and live in Birkenhead. On behalf of all genealogists keep up the good work as I don't know what we would do without people like you. Jane from New Zealand

A great story and what a marvellous job Mr Heaton has done in researching and cataloguing the memorial stones. If the missing gravestones have been sold for architectural reclaimation surely somebody, presumably Mr Hampson is accountable for this?. Congratulations to everyone involved in this fascinating story.
