Salford Local History - Cross Lane, Part 1 of 4
Words and Audio by Tony Flynn
Filmed and Edited by Tom Rodgers

In the first of a four part video, we travel down Cross Lane (and memory lane) recounting the fascinating history of this one street in Salford.

We see Cross Lane from Jean's Corner at the corner of Broad Street looking down towards the Salford docks, and how unrecognisable the same area is now.

Pendleton Unitarian Church, a beautiful building in its own right, with a wealth of Salford history, has long gone. It was to be replaced on its site by yet another McDonalds fast food emporium, whilst The Windsor Theatre, or Salford Hipp as it was better known, is now the site of the Thorn Court high rise flats.

Look out for the next instalment in the series this week.

Thanks to Tim Ashworth at Peel Park Local History Library for the loan of these beautiful photographs.

You just have to look at the page's source code to figure out the direct link for the video (look for "flv") then go to www.onlineflvplayer.com to watch it. Then again it might be easier just downloading Firefox. I'm actually using K-meleon right now which is a stripped down version of Firefox that uses hardly any resources if you have an older/slower computer. The video plays perfectly on K-meleon too.

Yes it's safe to download Firefox but as an alternative you can watch the video here: h**p://www.onlineflvplayer.com/?video=h**p://www.salfordonline.com/videofiles/cross%20lane%20v2e1%20intro%20to%20hip.flv (this site wordfilters "h t t p" so I had to edit it to "h**p" and you'll have to change it back before the link will work. It appears twice in the link. Sorry for the messing about.

Cross Lane, the making of me, I grew up there and proud of it, I have moved away but I always say that I am from Salford not Manchester and tell them about Cross Lane, and know I can show them how great it was, a great set of videos, how do I purchase a set?. Dave Thomas, Gold Coast, Australia.

There is a bug in the latest version of Internet Explorer (No8) which prevents Flash (.flv files) movies from playing ( this is the name given to the type of video we use on SalfordOnline) Please email editor@salfordOnline.com for some simple instructions on how to overcome this problem.

Yes I remember Barmy Mick etc. too. My parents had a corner stall and were the bakers and confectioners on the market, Ivy and Len Burchell. The queue frequently went around the corner. Does anyone remember them? As a boy I used to run errands for the other stallholders , bringing tea etc. from the cafe outside the gates. Have been trying for a while to get more info from that time, around 1955 onwards. Both my parents passed on a long time ago but it would be great to hear from someone who remembers them. Super content, very interesting. Do you have a section that covers churches and ecclesiastical history, bearing in mind the strong Roman Catholic presence from the influx of irish navvies, who built the Ship Canal? For instance St Paul's Paddington; a Church of England church, which is a most amazing building. Sorry, I forgot to leave my name on the last one, here it is.... Mike Greaves.

Cross Lane, what a place!,I could cry when I see what has happened to that area now, many a happy hour spent on the market looking for bargains,Barmy Mick,Barney Davies,Mad Mary, the old chap with a tripod camera, and you look at the state of the new market.Singing in the pubs, dancing at the drill hall, hot food from Luckieties on the way home. The poverty of Park Place,Cokey Nolan,Freddie Webb,Piccolo Pete,Joe Maxwell, great people but sadly gone, what I would give to go back in time, still we have our memories, thanks for keeping them alive.

I too have spent many a happy hour at the "Hipp",perched in the gods,I saw Jimmy Clitheroe there one year in pantomime and being fascinated by the shetland ponys on stage.A pint in The Grapes next door followed by chips from Parkers Chippy, paradise.Sadly all gone,i visited the area recently and it was unrecognisable.Look forward to further episodes, hope you have got The Ship Pub included!.Harry Edwards ex-Salfordian

Many thanks for that wonderfull trip down memory lane Tony. Many, many years ago our christmas treat of our Nana was a visit to Cross Lane "Hip". My first memory of the "Hip" was sitting in the "Gods" and singing along to " Charlie Brown he's a clown " also one the main characters throwing little gifts out to the people in the front rows, and never once, did one of those magical gifts reach the "Gods". Still "Happy days". Many thanks to Salfordonline, Welldone!!! J.Defty.
