Motorway lights switch off sparks safety risks
After the coalition Government revealed plans to plunge Britain’s motorways into darkness between midnight and 5am every night, critics warned that there could be serious road safety risks.
Proposals to turn off motorway lights at times of “low usage” was one of the first proposals after the coalition asked the public to put ideas forward for the new Government. However, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has responded with concern to the concept, with the group’s head Kevin Delaney expressing fears about driver stress and unseen obstacles. “It’s a lot less stressful to drive when the road ahead of you is lit,” he said. “Modern headlamps are very good, but they do not shine far enough ahead to enable you to stop in time for an unexpected obstacle when travelling at motorway speeds: at 70mph the stopping distance is 315ft. “Motorway lamp posts are very high off the ground, and bringing them closer to the road and using more modern lighting technology will help save energy and reduce light pollution.” What do you think of the idea to switch motorway lights off at night?
