Courteeners secret Salford gig
For one night only, Manchester rock radio station XFM are bringing Liam Fray of The Courteeners to Salford Lads Club for an intimate live acoustic gig tomorrow (Wednesday August 18). It'll make up another spot on the Salford Music Map, as it's the first ever gig to take place at the iconic Salford landmark on St Ignatius Walk. Only 250 lucky competition winners will get the chance to get up close and personal with Liam and see him perform material from the band’s albums St Jude and Falcon. This is a one-off event and tickets are only available to people who enter the competition being run by Manchester rock station XFM and online at xfm.co.uk. One lucky winner will even get the full VIP treatment with a luxury overnight stay in the Ramada Salford Quays. The Club was immortalised in the gatefold sleeve of The Smiths’ seminal 1986 album The Queen is Dead and in the band’s video for I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish. Morrissey contributed £20,000 towards the cost of the Club's recent refurbishment. XFM DJ Tim Cocker said, “Salford Lads Club is an iconic part of Salford and Manchester and their musical heritage. Liam is a top songwriter and great frontman so it’s going to be an amazing show and anyone lucky enough to be there is in for a treat.” Liam Fray of The Courteeners said, “I’m quite honoured to be involved in something so unique. Salford Lads Club is a key part of musical history so I can’t wait to be there, with my guitar, to give the fans something special.” Cllr Barry Warner, of Salford City Council, explained: “The Salford Music Map shows the houses, church halls, pubs, clubs and pokey little flats which have been witness to some of popular music's greatest moments and a fair few unsung ones.” You can get your free copy of The Salford Music Map from Salford Tourist Information Centre by calling 0161 848 8601.
