Salford residents get a taste of BBC Proms
Salford residents took a trip to the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London this weekend thanks to the council's partnership with the BBC Philharmonic. Residents young and old were offered the chance to take up the free tickets through a variety of charities and groups including Age Concern, Salford Youth Service and Salford Foundation. A group of 60 travelled from Swinton to London, before enjoying a concert in the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms programme. The free tickets were offered as part of Salford City Council's sponsorship with the BBC Philharmonic, ahead of their move to MediaCityUK next year along with five other departments: BBC Sport, Children's, Radio Five Live, Future Media and Technology and Learning. Joe Sharples from Salford City Council's Music and Performing Arts Service (MAPAS) said: "The BBC Proms is a great way for a young classical musician to see their elders perform and you learn and enjoy. I had an excellent day." Thelma Openshaw was offered tickets from Age Concern. She said: "To actually sit in the famous Royal Albert Hall and listen to the beautiful music was truly magical. I have listened via the television but to see it in person makes a huge difference." Eileen Walsh from Friends of Victoria Park said: "It was a lovely day out. The mix on the coach of both old and young worked really well. The experience was not to be missed!" The trip took place ahead of BBC Proms in the Park in Salford on 11 September in Buile Hill Park. This year's headline act is John Barrowman, star of BBC's Torchwood, who will be joined at Buile Hill Park by the BBC Philharmonic orchestra, world class mezzo soprano Juliette Pochin and Salford opera sensation Jon Christos. Councillor Barry Warner, lead member for culture and sport said: "This trip is a fantastic opportunity for Salford residents and a great example of how the partnership between the council and the BBC Philharmonic is already benefitting communities. "We look forward to welcoming the BBC Proms back to Salford in September for what is sure to be another wonderful event in our city." Tickets for BBC Proms in the Park are available by calling 0844 815 7131 or online at www.visitsalford.info. Tickets are priced at £20 each and are inclusive of postage and booking fee.
