BBC Phil's Hot Stuff at Eccles fire station
by Tony Flynn

Wednesday evening saw an evening of contemporary and improvised music performed by the BBC Philharmonic, University of Salford and Fire fighters and Community Support Officers from Eccles fire station.

A meeting between Martin Carney from Eccles Fire Station and Martin Maris from the BBC Philharmonic led to the somewhat strange musical partnership, MAPAS (The Salford Music Service) had already performed at the Eccles Fire Station and thus tonight performance came about.

An excited if not curious audience of around thirty attended and were treated to a musical extravaganza which started with the Eccles Firemen performing the prelude which was warmly received.

A piece entitled "The Sinking of the Titanic" by Gavin Bryars was performed by staff and students from the Dept of Media, Music and Performance at Salford University.

The Director was Joe Duddell who interestingly enough comes from Monton, so a local lad.

This was followed by the world premiere of "Hot Stuff" a piece of devised/improvised music in six sections performed by members of the BBC Philharmonic.

The grand finale was, "Drinking and Hooting Machine" by John White which was performed with gusto by all the musicians and members of the audience, with special instruments provided.

The evening finished with the musicians staying to have a cup of tea and having a chat with the audience in the Fire Station's Community Room.

So all in all a marvellous evening was had by musicians and audience alike, in the most unlikeliest of setting and I look forward to further concerts there.
