Video: Salford remembers - Holocaust Memorial Day 2012
Salford today marked Holocaust Memorial Day 2012 with a series of films and meditations at MediaCityUK. SalfordOnline's Tom Rodgers interviewed Alex Klein and MediaCityUK chaplain Rev Hayley Matthews, reflecting on the years of history since the Nazis' attempt to annihilate all European Jews. Alex spoke of how the Holocaust affected his view of the world, learning of these dehumanising events from the age of only two or three years old. His house would constantly be filled with Polish and German refugees, and his family would always try to help those fleeing persucution and genocide. Elie Weisel, a Holocaust survivor, wrote: "We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." And so the message was in Salford today. We must speak up against hatred, oppression and discrimination. It's still happening all around us. Ethnic cleansing in Serbia, Bosnia, in Rwanda and Sudan. Today's series of films looking at the groups affected by the Holocaust, and with the messages of understanding, peace and tolerance propounded by Salford's faith community, the lesson is that we can overcome.
