Salix Homes world leaders visit
A group of future world leaders has visited Salix Homes this week to learn about how the organisation responded to last summer’s riots.

The delegation, from the Royal College of Defence Studies, had a tour of the social housing provider’s state of the art CCTV control centre and a presentation from key members of staff.

The control centre played a pivotal role during the riots as it captured over 2,000 hours of footage which provided crucial evidence to help the police convict suspected rioters.

The officials learned how concerned staff contacted 500 vulnerable residents in the days after the riots to ensure they felt safe and secure.

They were told about the ongoing community initiatives that Salix Homes, along with partners like Salford City Council, are involved with to help restore confidence within local communities.

The top military officials have been visiting locations across the world to see good leadership in action.

Salix Homes was selected to host part of the tour as an example of how a housing provider can rise to the challenges that follow civil unrest.

Kevin Scarlett, Chief Executive of Salix Homes, said:

“It really is a privilege to be chosen to host this visit. Here at Salix we have worked incredibly hard to build good relationships with our tenants and that really helped us following the riots.

“The actions of that small number of individuals that night was not representative of Salix tenants, the vast majority of whom were absolutely disgusted by what they witnessed.

“We have been happy to share what we have learned with these incredibly influential people and hope it will be of some use to them in their future as world leaders.”

Derek Long, head of the North for the National Housing Federation, said:

"I welcome today's visit by members of the Royal College of Defence Studies to Salford.

"Social landlords such as Salix Homes provide the glue which ensures that local communities are good places to live.

“Across the country social housing organisations invest more than £400 million in crucial services including community centres, debt advice services and youth groups."

I don't know why people praise Salix homes, I've been waiting four months for them to replace a faulty smoke detector. I've have even emailed Kevin Scarlett regarding anti-social behaviour and breaches of tenancy and nothing has been done. All they are interested in is filling the empty property, ripping communities apart, pulling down good houses and building houses the size of a shoe box.
