Pendleton estate raise £600 for mugged Salford gran

The Pendleton community have pulled together to raise over £600 for a Salford gran who was put in hospital by two teens earlier this month.

Bridget Kavanagh, 67, was attacked by the pair as she walked along the ginnel between Whit Lane and Auckland Drive on 16th January.

The teens punched her in the face, knocking her to the floor, before stealing her purse, which contained her pension money.

Bridget was hospitalised by the attack, which left her with face and arm injuries and shock.

But the next day, locals Emma Walker and her friends Debi Young and Dave Reid started a collection to replace Bridget’s pension money.

They visited local schools and shops and also collected from door-to-door visits in the area where the Salford gran was attacked.

The response from the Pendleton community has been overwhelming, and they have since managed to raise over £600.

Debi, a local mum who runs a nearby nursery, said: “Bridget’s my neighbour. She’s a very kind lady and she gets on very well with my son, 6, so we were very upset when we found out what had happened to her.

“She’s lived in the Whit Lane area for over twenty years. People have grown up with her there. Everybody in the community has been absolutely sickened by the actions of these people.”

Debi described how she, Emma and Dave promoted the collection on Facebook, receiving responses from people who did not even know Bridget personally.

“We’ve raised well over £600 now in donations from people who didn’t even know Breda, but were sickened by the attack. We set the collection up and we ran it, but the local community as a whole has been involved in this.”

Adrian Turton is Bridget's grandson. He said that his nan was now feeling better but still upset about the attack and unsure about going out on her own.

Emma said, “Myself and two friends thought it would be nice to start a little collection.

“Little did we know that in two days we’d get over £500 – just from our local estate.”

“The last two days have made me realise that Salford doesn’t deserve the harsh name it’s given.

“Salford is full of honest, kind, caring and genuine people. It’s such a shame that a small handful drag it down.”
