Joint celebration at Salford Library
Working Class Movement Library marks LGBT History Month on National Libraries Day. Join us on Saturday 4 February 2012 as we mark both National Libraries Day and LGBT History Month with a talk on Eleanor Rathbone, campaigner for women's rights and pioneer of family allowances. It takes place between 2 and 4pm, it’s free, and everyone is welcome. Eleanor Rathbone, Independent MP elected in 1929, had strong ties to the North West but was also involved in international issues such as campaigns against female circumcision in Africa and child brides in India. She was one of the first to protest against Fascism and took up the cause of refugees. However, it is her contribution as a feminist theoretician and activist that Clare Debenham will examine in her talk. Eleanor’s conventional appearance and methods belied a revolutionary approach to the position of women which has been overlooked in favour of more flamboyant personalities. Light refreshments will be available. The Library is open to the public on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons. Admission is free.
