Salford Reds support Salford Royal Maternity Unit
Salford City Reds have pledged their support to keep Salford Royal Maternity and Special Care Baby Unit Open and urge all Salford Residents of whatever age to sign petitions and write to their GP’s to ask them to support the decision to keep services in Salford. Salford City Reds Captain Malcolm Alker said: “Salford Royal Maternity Unit is a vitally important service for local residents, whose families have been born in Salford for many generations. We are supporting this campaign because many of us have firsthand experience of this fantastic service and we agree that people should not have to travel into another city to have their babies.” Campaign organisers expect hundreds of people to attend a rally this Saturday from 2.00pm to demonstrate the huge level of support across the city. The event in Buile Hill Park supported by Salford City Reds Foundation, will showcase real-life stories from the maternity and special-care units. Visitors will be able to sign the petition and take part in a born in Salford photograph dedicated to all ‘Hope’ babies born at the unit over the last 44 years. Lisa Kean, Chair of the Maternity Forum and a campaign organiser said: “The government must start to take notice that the people of Salford do not want to lose the Maternity and Special Care Baby Units. It’s fantastic to see local institutions such as Salford Reds getting behind the campaign and we now need everyone to follow suit and make their voices heard. A decision is just weeks away so this is our last chance to make a change.” The website www.keephopematernityopen.com launched this week, will feature video messages of support from people across the city – including Salford City Reds players – who are proud to be born in Salford.
