Building for Bus will cause major delays
by Tom Rodgers
The construction for the Leigh Guided Busway will cause setbacks for drivers who regularly use the East Lancashire Road, the A580. So say Urban Vision, who today released information about upcoming road works in the area. The controversial busway will link Salford with the towns in the west of Greater Manchester like Wigan and Leigh. An individual lane for buses is to be built on the East Lancs Road, and concrete tracks would be dug along the road for the guided vehicle - essentially a cross between a tram and a bus - along four miles of road between Ellenbrook and Leigh. The "major disruption" will continue until July 2011, say the company, who look after highways repair in Salford. The preparatory work for the Leigh Guided Busway (LGB) is going ahead despite the fact that the controversial project is currently under review. The LGB, which will see an extra lane added to the A580, was subject to a public inquiry in 2004. The then Secretary of State asked for extra information on the environmental aspects of the scheme. The cost of this scheme was estimated at a little over £42m including vehicles in 2006. But the GMITA has voted to arrest the construction until another review has gone through.
