Pendleton flat caught in kitchen fire

At around 1am on Wednesday morning (4 March) firefighters received reports of a fire in Briarhill Court in Pendleton, Salford.

Three fire crews, from Salford, Agecroft and Broughton, were mobilised and on their arrival at the flats found a fire involving a kitchen within a flat on the 24th floor.

Said a GM Fire and Rescue spokesperson: "Two casualties had rescued themselves from the property when firefighters arrived, who were treated by Paramedics for the effects of the smoke before being taken to hospital.

"There were a further three casualties, from an adjacent property, who suffered the effects of smoke but declined hospital treatment."

Firefighters tackled the fire using a jet whilst wearing their standard breathing apparatus, later using a Positive Pressure Fan to remove smoke.

The fire caused severe damage to the kitchen and started when cooking was left unattended.

There's such a thing as a "toast proof" smoke alarm. I've no idea how well they work in practice though.

It's easlily done isn't it? It's a shame we can't invent effective smoke detectors, you know, ones that don't go off when you make a piece of toast.
