200 police staff face redundancy

Over 200 staff working at Greater Manchester Police will today receive compulsory redundancy notices.

GMPA, the police authority, approved the 218 notices for staff carrying out "operation support functions".

A spokesperson for the authority said: "With 231 vacancies across the Force, every effort will made to redeploy staff before the end of the three month notice period."

With a budget cut of 4 per cent, Greater Manchester Police has to save £134m over the next four years.

Serving police offices cannot be made redundant but more than 200 officers who leave or retire will not be replaced as part of cost-cutting measures.

The redundancies come after a force-wide review to save £31m this year, in which 582 police staff posts and 255 police officers posts will be lost.

Paul Murphy, chairman of the GMPA, said that the authority would try to redeploy staff into existing vacancies:

“There are currently 231 vacancies across GMP and we will continue to work closely with the Force and trade unions to redeploy as many staff as possible so that those who want to remain with the organisation have the opportunity to do so."

Chief Constable Peter Fahy said that GMP would concentrate on keeping police in frontline positions by moving 107 staff from support roles into officer positions by January 2012.

“This remains a very painful time for GMP and we are just part way through a four-year long process.

“I understand that this is a devastating time for some staff and their families but in order to achieve the savings that are required, we have no option but to transform the way in which certain departments and parts of the Force work.”
