Video: Salford's £4m plan for Courts explained
by Tom Rodgers

Salford councillors will travel to London in September to plead for Salford Magistrates courts to be kept open.

The delegation, including Councillors David lancaster and Karen Garrido, will talk to Jonathan Djanogly parliamentary under-secretary at the Ministry of Justice.

£15m has to be saved nationally from the closure or merger of courts.

It has come to light from Bexley Square's own recent survey that £4m would be needed over 3 years to keep the Magistrates Courts on Chapel Street open.

SalfordOnline's series of interviews in March on the potential closure of Bexley Square highlighted the importance of the courts to community justice.

Now, we interview councillor David Lancaster, who pinpoints Salford Council's position, and tells us where the £4m might come from.

I believe that The City of Salford should retain the Courts within the City and provide the local justice. The people of this City does respect it's heritage and will not bow to the Courts in Manchester. I believe that is our Salford courts close an overall non apperance of defendants in Manchester court will lead to extra costs of administerial and police time. The bench will suffer and justice will suffer.
