GMP slammed but respond strongly
New national rankings by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabularies (HMIC) show that GMP has been graded 'poor' for their performance in beating local crime.

The official watchdog of the police showed that GMP was ‘causing concern’ and ‘struggled in some key areas’.

However, GMP insist that they have continued to cut crime and improve public confidence according to the latest figures released.

An official statement said:
"The Force has seen crime reduced by 13 per cent in figures for April 2009 to the end of February 2010 and three out of four people have confidence in their local police with latest figures showing public confidence is now at 75 per cent."

Chief Constable Peter Fahy said: "We have seen some major reductions in crime and at the end of 2009 were reporting the biggest drop in two years."

Latest figures for the end of February 2010 show burglary has now been cut by 15 per cent, violent offences where a person is injured show an eight per cent reduction, robbery has reduced by 14 per cent, and vehicle crime cut by 18 per cent.

Chief Constable Fahy added: "It is important to note that the figures in the report are five months out of date and the Force has had significant achievements in cutting crime and improving performance since then.
