No Cold Calling Zone for Pendleton flats
Residents of Pendleton have worked in partnership with Salford City Council, Salix Homes and Greater Manchester Police to establish a No Cold Calling Zone.

The No Cold Calling Zone applies to five blocks of medium rise flats known as The Square including Beech Court, Lombardy Court, Malus Court, Salix Court and Hornbeam Court. It prevents residents being harassed by unwanted doorstep callers offering goods or services and protects them from criminals impersonating callers intent on tricking their way into their homes to steal money and property.

The Zone is designated by signs at the entrances of each block and at the main entrances to the area that clearly state that cold callers should not knock on residents’ doors. A sticker has also been provided to residents for display in a front window or at the front door to advise callers that they do not accept cold calling.

Residents of The Square voted overwhelmingly in favour of the Zone and have been provided with advice on how to deal with any callers they may receive.

Graham Worrall, Homewatch Coordinator for Pendleton and Secretary of the Beech Court Tenants and Residents Association, said:

“ Quite simply this is about local residents or communities having the confidence to say ''NO'' to uninvited salespeople or to warn rouge traders and cold callers that they are being watched. That is why we have set up such a scheme within Pendleton, in conjunction with the Homewatch Scheme, to make it a safer place to live, with help from Salford City Council, GMP and Salix Homes.”

Councillor David Lancaster, Deputy Leader of Salford City Council and lead member for community safety, added:

“ Uninvited and unwanted cold callers cause unnecessary distress for residents. We know that older, vulnerable residents in particular are targeted through this type of activity. These zones do make a difference, offering residents protection and reassuring them that their community is a safe place to live in.”

Chief Inspector Vinny Greener, Salford Division, Greater Manchester Police, added:

"No Cold Calling Zones work, they give older and vulnerable residents increased protection from bogus callers, rogue traders and the threat of distraction burglaries. It's about making residents feel safe in their own homes.

"Bogus official burglaries are very distressing and we take them very seriously. We really support these zones, it makes it harder for thieves to target what they think are easy pickings by giving residents the confidence to challenge and report unwanted visitors."

Sue Sutton, Salix Homes Director of Neighbourhood Services, added:

“ Residents in this part of Pendleton have told us of their concerns about the frequent unsolicited visits to their homes. In response, Salix Homes has, along with the council and the Police, supported residents, to set up this zone, which will act as a very powerful deterrent to unscrupulous cold callers.”
