Minister backs green deal for Salford residents
A Government Minister took to the streets of Ordsall to see first-hand how a scheme to make homes more energy efficient is benefitting households in Salford. Greg Barker MP, Energy and Climate Change Minister, met residents from the New Barracks and Regents Park estates during a visit hosted by the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA). Mr Barker was checking on progress on the Green Deal - the government’s flagship energy saving plan which aims to transform the country’s homes to make them warmer and cheaper to run. The Green Deal is currently being trialled by AGMA, with Salix Homes piloting the scheme in Salford alongside the city’s Decent Homes investment programme. The New Barracks estate - home to the iconic Salford lads club - is the oldest social housing in Salford. Solid-wall Edwardian properties on the estate have benefited from work including internal insulation, high performance double glazed windows, A-rated condensing combination boilers, and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. Improvements to homes on the Regents Park estate include external wall insulation, along with double glazed windows and A-rated condensing combination boilers. Greg Barker MP, Energy and Climate Change Minister, said: This is a great exemplar of the type of community project that I want the Green Deal to take nationwide. This was a very instructive visit to Salford, where I think I have seen a glimpse of the future.” Councillor Peter Connor, Salford City Council's lead member for housing said: " Improving homes and reducing our carbon footprint are key priorities for the city. The work at New Barracks and Regents Park is an example of this commitment that is showing how real savings can be passed on to residents by making their homes more energy efficient.” Matt Roberts, Salix Homes' head of investment and maintenance said: “ We'd like to thank the minister for taking the time to come and see how we are trailing the Green Deal to show how it can be rolled out nationally. Salix Homes is employing innovative retrofit projects to help to lower energy bills for residents and change how they use energy. We have been careful to ensure that improvements made to homes do deliver savings for customers at the same time as reducing carbon emissions, and we're pleased with the results we're already starting to see.“ Source: Salix Homes.
